Discussion
In my hypothesis I stated that the egg in water would get larger. My hypothesis was correct.
I also stated in my hypothesis that the egg submerged in the molasses would get smaller because there is less water in the molasses and more inside the egg so the water would defuse out so that the substances would get to equilibrium. My hypothesis was correct.
We took two eggs and placed them separately in two different substances. We did this to help us understand how osmosis and diffusion works.
There were a number of variables that we did consider when we were conducting the experiment. There could have been a mistake when measuring the amount of substances in the beakers, there could have been a mistake when weighing the eggs, and someone could tamper with the egg, move the egg from where it was being stored or the egg could have been faulty to start with. All of these variables were taken into consideration and controlled so that none of them happened. We double checked all the measurements and checked the egg before it was used. The eggs were stored very carefully and could not have been tampered with.
There were massive differences between the eggs that were put into the different substances. The egg that was put into the molasses shrank in mass but when the egg submerged in water came out of the water it had gained mass. The volume in the beakers did change. The molasses had more volume and the water had less volume when the eggs were removed.
The experiment was valid and successful. I would not change anything because the experiment achieved all my goals and fulfilled my hopes for the experiment. The only source of error that I could think of would be the measuring could have been a little off but I think that it was accurate. If I were to redo the experiment I would add an egg just sitting on a plate because it would show what would happen if the egg was not submerged in any substance.
